“Museums, Sustainability, and a Better Life” is the theme for the International Museum Day on May 18, 2023. When explaining this theme, the International Council of Museums emphasizes that museums are trusted institutions and essential components of our shared social structure. They hold a unique position and have the potential to create a chain reaction that promotes positive change. From supporting climate action and fostering inclusivity to addressing social barriers and improving mental health, museums should play a more significant role.
This call to action is particularly crucial for people living in an unprecedented era of great transformation. Cultural heritage carries a vast amount of information about humanity. As we strive to seek answers between birth and death, imagine the separation and overlap of different cultures, and bridge the gaps between the past and the future, cultural heritage becomes crucial.
Coincidentally, just three days ago (on May 15), Tencent Games announced the progress of three digital cultural heritage projects during its annual conference. These projects include “Cloud Tour of the Great Wall” in collaboration with the China Foundation for Cultural Heritage Conservation, “Digital Caves of Buddhist Scriptures” in partnership with the Dunhuang Research Institute, and “Digital Axis” in cooperation with the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Cultural Heritage and the Office for the Protection and Management of the Central Axis of Beijing.
