Duozhi.com, March 16th – Online learning platform Duolingo (NASDAQ: DUOL) has announced the integration of OpenAI’s GPT-4 and the launch of a new product, “Duolingo Max,” which includes two major new features. Currently, the Max subscription service is only available on the iPhone platform and is primarily targeted at English-speaking users learning Spanish and French.
According to Duolingo, the two new features are “Explain My Answer” and “Roleplay.”
Explain My Answer: Learners want to know why they make mistakes. This feature provides specific explanations for most exercise types in Duolingo courses. The replies are generated by artificial intelligence and sent in the form of a chatbot by Duo, the owl.
In other words, while learning a language on Duolingo, if a learner wants to know why they made a mistake, they can ask Duo for specific guidance. Duo can provide an explanation for whether an answer is correct or incorrect, as well as additional examples or explanations.
Roleplay: Roleplay allows learners to practice conversational skills with Duolingo characters in an interactive AI chatbot experience. Dialogues are centered around scenarios, such as cafes or airports. Finally, learners receive feedback on their writing skills and some encouragement.
In other words, an AI character can engage in multiple rounds of conversation with a learner, creating a real language learning environment.
The person in charge of Duolingo also explained the scientific basis for the introduction of the Roleplay feature: “There is a best practice in language learning called ‘implicit learning,’ where learners acquire knowledge by repeatedly using vocabulary and grammar in a series of contexts without realizing it. In other words, practice is more effective than memorizing rules. This led Duolingo to try something interesting.”
Duolingo also tested AI through its Duolingo English Test (DET), providing millions of students with more convenient educational opportunities by using AI at every step of the testing process, including generating questions, scoring, and ensuring test security.
Duolingo’s latest Max subscription service charges $30 per month or $168 annually, with the Explain My Answer and Roleplay features added on top of the subscription.
