How will Chegg change? Actually, AI can also be utilized by education companies.
Currently, Chegg is embracing ChatGPT and using it to develop a chatbot named “CheggMate” in conjunction with GPT-4. CheggMate can answer students’ questions anytime and anywhere, ensuring accuracy, and can provide appropriate tests for different students.
According to Dan Rosensweig, the first step is to introduce CheggMate, which was recently launched in partnership with OpenAI. CheggMate will harness the power of ChatGPT, combined with Chegg’s proprietary data and subject matter experts, to make learning more personalized, adaptive, accurate, fast, and effective, all in an easy-to-use and conversational way. That is to say, compared to students previously using Chegg to search for corresponding answers without interaction, at most, giving a solution step, students have no way of knowing “why”. However, CheggMate can interact with students, and students can keep asking questions, and it will provide corresponding explanations.
In addition, CheggMate will also provide students with personalized learning paths and customized tests, which can be said to achieve “teaching in accordance with the student’s aptitude”.
Chegg has experience in improving students’ grades over the past 13 years, as well as learning classification, 150,000 online subject matter experts, and billions of unique learning content owned by Chegg, coupled with ChatGPT’s real-time conversation features, CheggMate will become a powerful and unique learning tool.
Currently, the biggest drawback of ChatGPT is that accuracy is difficult to guarantee, which is fatal to the education field. Therefore, human assistance is indispensable at this stage. In Dan Rosensweig’s view, future education will also be a combination of “technology and human” sides.

According to Chegg’s research, 85% of students prefer to have human experts involved in their learning guidance. Dan Rosensweig believes that “the future of learning is a combination of artificial intelligence technology and human coaching, which can establish trust and ensure accuracy. Ultimately, we believe that the introduction of CheggMate will help us expand the market size, strengthen our relationship with users, and reduce content costs.”
Large language models are currently used at the level of search, and history has shown that concentration and category-leading vertical fields are the places to create lasting value over time. CheggMate is a customized learning method designed for learning, and it will provide personalized assessments, practice tests, and instant feedback using Chegg’s proprietary step-by-step solutions.
According to reports, later this month Chegg will launch a beta version of CheggMate. With testing and iteration, Chegg will expand its access throughout the year. The subscription fee for CheggMate has not yet been determined, and it may start at $15.95 or $19.95 per month, or slightly higher than the previous subscription service.
Chegg has not provided a rough range for next quarter’s performance expectations. Dan Rosensweig said he expects subscription revenue to continue to decline next quarter, and it remains to be seen whether the upcoming Cheggmate can make up for the losses later this year.
It can be seen that the impact of ChatGPT on education has already manifested. Chegg is the latest education company, following Duolingo, Khan Academy, and Speak, to embed GPT-4. AI is a double-edged sword, and embracing technology may change one’s fortunes. In the future, companies that can better apply AI technology will prevail.
