How much can the chairman and CEO of A-share listed companies earn in a year? With the conclusion of the 2022 annual reports, the salaries of top executives in listed companies have been revealed.
According to data compiled by “Caijing” magazine based on Wind data, the average salary of A-share chairmen in 2022 was 1.1321 million yuan, with a median value of 0.8253 million yuan. The average salary of CEOs was 1.368 million yuan, higher than that of chairmen, with a median value of 0.9382 million yuan. These figures have increased compared to 2021.
In 2022, there were 1,932 chairmen of listed companies with annual salaries of one million yuan or more, accounting for 38% of the total. There were 112 chairmen with annual salaries exceeding five million yuan, and 28 chairmen earning more than ten million yuan. As for CEOs, there were 2,322 executives with salaries of one million yuan or more, accounting for nearly half, 133 CEOs earning over five million yuan, and 28 CEOs earning more than ten million yuan.
Which industries have the highest executive salaries? According to the first-level industry classification by Shenwan, in terms of the average annual executive salary (the total annual salary of management teams in all listed companies within the industry divided by the number of companies), non-banking financials, banks, real estate, pharmaceuticals, and beauty care rank among the top five.
However, non-banking financials, banks, and real estate experienced a round of pay cuts in the past year, with the average annual executive salaries declining by 21%, 12%, and 14% respectively compared to the previous year. On the other hand, industries such as nonferrous metals, power equipment, petroleum and petrochemicals, and coal have implemented varying degrees of salary increases. Benefiting from the rise in commodity prices, these related listed companies have performed well, with leading growth in net profits, making their salary increases understandable.
Who were the highest-earning executives in A-share companies in 2022? Li Bin, the newly appointed vice president of Tongwei Co., Ltd., topped the list with an annual salary of 86.5291 million yuan, far ahead of other executives. Li Qiang, the CEO of the Science and Technology Innovation Board enterprise Sany Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., and Zhou Fugui, the chairman of the company, ranked first in terms of CEO and chairman salaries in A-share listed companies, earning 54.9789 million yuan and 42.3561 million yuan respectively. They earned an average of 150,000 yuan and 116,000 yuan per day. Li Ge, the chairman of WuXi AppTec, ranked fourth with an annual salary of 41.969 million yuan.
In addition to these executives earning “over 40 million yuan,” there are several executives earning over 20 million yuan, including Fang Jianmin, CEO and Chief Medical Officer of Rongchang Biochemical, Li Xiting, chairman of Mindray Medical, Zhang Xuezhen, chairman and CEO of Wentai Technology, Pan Gang, chairman and CEO of Yili Group, He Jun and Liang Yubo, CEO and deputy CEO of Meihua Biological, and Shen Qingfang, chairman of Pengding Holdings.
